The West African Coalition Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (WACTIPSOM) continues to strengthen regional collaboration and cross-border cooperation among stakeholders in West Africa to enhance the identification, protection, referral, and reintegration of survivors of trafficking in persons.
On 9 June 2026, four female survivors of trafficking were successfully referred from Ghana to Nigeria through the collaborative efforts of WACTIPSOM stakeholders in both countries. The survivors were identified, protected, and referred by Mr. Eric Nana Peasah of the Coalition of CSOs on Migration, Ghana, whose commitment and professionalism ensured a safe and coordinated return process.
Upon their arrival in Lagos, the survivors were received by staff of Patriotic Citizen Initiatives (PCI), a member organization of WACTIPSOM Nigeria. The reception process was conducted in line with survivor-centered principles, prioritizing the dignity, safety, and immediate welfare needs of the returnees. Food, drinking water, and other essential support were provided to the survivors upon arrival to ensure their comfort and well-being.
Following their reception, a comprehensive profiling and documentation exercise was conducted to assess their needs and facilitate appropriate reintegration support. Family tracing and communication were immediately initiated, and successful contact was established with the family members of all four survivors. Their families were informed of their safe return and actively engaged in the reunification process.
To promote safe and dignified reintegration, the survivors were provided with onward transportation assistance to their respective states of origin. Family members were present at the designated arrival points to receive and warmly welcome them home, marking a significant milestone in their recovery and reintegration journey.
The leadership of WACTIPSOM Nigeria commends Mr. Eric Nana Peasah and Patriotic Citizen Initiatives (PCI) for their unwavering dedication to the identification, protection, and referral of survivors of trafficking. Their collective efforts underscore the importance of regional cooperation and coordinated referral mechanisms in addressing trafficking in persons and ensuring that survivors receive the protection and support they deserve.
This successful cross-border referral demonstrates the effectiveness of regional partnerships in combating human trafficking and highlights the importance of coordinated action among civil society organizations, government agencies, and community stakeholders. Through strengthened collaboration and information sharing, WACTIPSOM members continue to advance survivor-centered responses and contribute to safer migration pathways across West Africa.
WACTIPSOM remains committed to strengthening partnerships across the region, promoting effective cross-border collaboration, and advancing collective action against trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants. Through sustained cooperation among stakeholders, the coalition continues to champion the rights, protection, and reintegration of vulnerable persons while working towards a trafficking-free West Africa.
