Patriotic Citizen Initiatives (PCI) participated in the Community Dialogues on Electoral Integrity – Trusted Voices for Credible Elections, a two-day capacity-building workshop held from 24–25 June 2026 at the Carlton Swiss Grand Hotel, Enugu, Nigeria.
Representing PCI at the workshop were Joy Osemene and Abigail Omolara Alatishe, who joined 38 participants drawn from 11 states across Nigeria's South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. The event brought together civil society organizations, media practitioners, traditional and religious leaders, women and youth representatives, and other key stakeholders committed to strengthening electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The workshop was organized by FIIAPP under the EU Support to ECOWAS in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project, with funding from the European Union (EU), the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Denmark.
Strengthening Electoral Integrity Through Community Engagement
The dialogue focused on empowering trusted community voices to promote peaceful, inclusive, and credible elections. Participants explored practical approaches to strengthening citizen participation, enhancing collaboration among stakeholders, and developing community-driven strategies to safeguard Nigeria's democratic processes.
Throughout the sessions, participants examined the current electoral landscape and identified several challenges affecting electoral integrity in Nigeria.
Key Issues Identified
Discussions highlighted a number of concerns requiring urgent attention, including:
Declining public trust in electoral processes due to political interference, insecurity, and vote-buying.
Persistent voter apathy, particularly among young people.
Low participation of women and young women in electoral processes, both as voters and candidates.
Limited civic and voter education across communities.
The growing influence of money politics.
Concerns over the neutrality of security agencies during elections.
The increasing spread of misinformation, disinformation, hate speech, and fake news, especially through digital platforms.
Weak protection mechanisms for whistleblowers and election observers.
The need for stronger community ownership of electoral integrity initiatives.
Participants also explored the importance of Early Warning Systems (EWS) in identifying vulnerabilities across the electoral cycle, assessing political and social dynamics, monitoring traditional and digital media, and detecting potential triggers of electoral violence.
Discussions further emphasized the critical role of civil society organizations in preventing electoral violence through pre-election monitoring, conflict and grievance assessment, stakeholder mapping, engagement with security actors, and collaboration with regional and international development partners.
Key Recommendations
At the end of the workshop, participants recommended several actions to strengthen electoral integrity, including:
Expanding grassroots voter education through community structures.
Increasing the political participation of women and young people.
Engaging traditional and religious leaders as trusted advocates for peaceful elections.
Strengthening the accountability and neutrality of security agencies.
Intensifying efforts to combat vote-buying and electoral corruption.
Supporting fact-checking initiatives and responsible media reporting.
Establishing community-based early warning systems for election-related violence.
Providing stronger protection for whistleblowers and election observers.
Ensuring meaningful youth inclusion in political party structures beyond symbolic leadership roles.
Strengthening collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations, the media, women, youth, and community leaders to promote peaceful and credible elections.
PCI's Way Forward
The knowledge and insights gained from the workshop will contribute significantly to PCI's democracy and governance programming. Building on the recommendations from the dialogue, PCI intends to:
Organize community-based voter education and civic awareness campaigns.
Promote active participation of women and youth in democratic governance.
Collaborate with traditional and religious leaders to foster peaceful electoral processes.
